BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Jan. 20, 2010) -- Cherokee County quarterback Coty Blanchard was named the 28th recipient of the Alabama Sports Writers Association Mr. Football Award on Wednesday at the ASWA's annual Player of the Year Awards luncheon, presented by Hibbett Sports, in Birmingham.

Blanchard -- a 6-foot, 180-pound senior -- led the Warriors to the Class 4A title for the first time in school history, capping a season that saw him complete 200 of 289 passes for 2,916 yards and 35 touchdowns. All were school records. He also rushed for 1,161 yards on 151 carries with 20 touchdowns.

He closed out his high school career in the 2009 Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic on December 12 in Mobile, helping lead his Alabama squad to a 21-13 victory. In the contest, he rushed for 60 yards on 14 carries and also threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Hoover's Maudrecus Humphrey.

For his career, Blanchard set the Warriors' school passing record with 6,948 yards and 75 touchdowns, while rushing for 2,381 yards and 38 touchdowns. Blanchard was also the MVP of the Class 4A title game, leading his team to a 31-27 win over Jackson, Blanchard was 14 of 23 passing for 187 yards with a TD pass and carried 20 times for 100 yards and a game-winning 5-yard touchdown run.

Since the All-Star Classic's inception in 1988, 19 of the past 23 Alabama Mr. Football Award winners have played in the All-Star Classic.
